Our Country Needs “Calm” Today

A willingness to the commitment for #Peace – this is what the country needs the most today. The streets are burning, shops are being looted, livelihoods are being lost – is this the definition of a democratic protest? If it is, then democracy must have undergone a rather drastic change to have reached this point of anarchy. The heartbreaking death of George Floyd is being distorted by those with vested interests to undulate the unnecessary demonstrations of rebellion and mayhem that stand unfounded in the display of their violence. The violent protests do more harm than good to raise the issue of racism and its disgustful facets. A societal reform cannot be orchestrated through unruly means – the prime concern, in the light of Mr. Floyd’s death, must rest on eliminating the roots of racist ideologies that still persist; not on systematically undoing the democratic structures of the world’s oldest democracy.

The American administration has been constantly criticizing China’s oppressive tactics, especially now, given the unprecedented manner in which the latter has cracked down on Hong Kong’s rallies for liberty. China’s authoritarian stances cannot be put in parallel with the democratic procedures that unfold in a country like the US. Yet, China goes on to iterate how it is unfair and hypocritic of the US to criticize them when the raging protests are exploding within the country are being met by ‘oppression’. The situation prevailing in the US is only giving others like China an opportunity to stray the discourse away from the actuality.

The pandemic has landed plenty of Americans in uncertainty and ratcheted up their insecurity with so much out of their control. Jobs are being lost and the economy is only just managing to take minor steps back to its normalcy. There are slight changes in the economy for some – a sign of hope, indeed, for those who were waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel. However, with political unrest being surreptitiously woven into a recovering society, is it not evident that some are trying to bring down the efforts of the administration? The socialist inclinations in the political arena are seizing every option possible to climb up the ladder and twist narratives in their favor. Any action that the #POTUS is carrying out now is in the best interests of the citizens of the country – it is, without any doubt, his responsibility to ensure the safety of American citizens and that is precisely what is being done today. To interpret this as a ‘crackdown’ (and thus aligning it with the Chinese action) is to be more childish than mature in a situation that demands responsible demeanor.

Let us not be moved astray by certain political allies of self-absorption. The need to remove intolerance and restore the economy to its original state must be the two most immediate points to be ticked off the to-do list – and this must be done without each side warring against the other. Collective action, the pandemic has taught us, is the most important tool to use in times of turbulence. There must be community progress, but it needn’t be facilitated through contentious means. History does not show us any contrary pictures.
