New Yorkers Laugh Out Loud When Told Their Mayor Wants To Be President

Caricature: DonkeyHotey

New Yorkers got a good laugh the other day when the mayor who has done a rotten job for NYC has announced he wants to do the same thing for America. Yup.  Bill DeBlasio, who virtually single-handedly drove record numbers of New York residents to flee his high taxes, massive regulations, and dysfunctional administration is now the 24th Democrat candidate for President.

There’s a reason real estate values have plummeted, crime is exploding, homelessness is climbing, and the performance of New York schools has dropped off a cliff.

Why? Because DeBlasio stands right next to Bernie on the ideological left, but with two very distinct differences. First, Bernie is a lot older.  And second, Bernie has yet to destroy a great American city.  Other than that, they are pretty similar in their strong desire to turn America into Venezuela.

Consider Bill DeBlasio’s announcement of his own mini Green New Deal in NYC. His plan would ban glass and steel buildings; prohibit all processed meats in schools, jails, and government buildings; and purchase electricity from a hydro energy plant in Quebec that blocks water flow, causes pollution, and kills tens of thousands of fish.  But at least the new energy purchased will only cost twice as much as New Yorkers are paying now.

Of course, his micro version of the GND hasn’t stopped DeBlasio from producing his own huge emissions.  Both those he gushes into the environment as his daily motorcade drives across town to his preferred gym, and those he discharges into the political environment with his radical rants against private property.

And that’s another thing.  DeBlasio was originally elected on the promise he’d close the gap in NYC between rich and poor.  Of course, that hasn’t happened, but he has managed to convince what middle class once existed in NYC to move to New Jersey, Florida, or just about anywhere else.

DeBlasio shares Bernie’s socialist sympathies on a range of other issues as well. Nationalized health care, guaranteed minimum income, free college, and no plan to pay for any of it except a vague promise to tax the hell out of the rich.

But believe it or not, DeBlasio is even worse than Bernie in some very important ways.  One way concerns the private ownership of real estate – DeBlasio thinks it’s wrong. He once suggested that in the interest of diversity, City Hall should determine where New Yorkers live and where they work.

Got a condo on Park Avenue and contribute to Donald Trump?  Pack your bags, you’re headed to the worst neighborhood in Yonkers (no offense to Yonkers.)

If you’re Chase Bank – or any other business – and you headquarter in a big shiny building on Broadway – get ready to spend 10’s of millions to refurbish your building to meet the Mayor’s Green New Deal standards.  Oh, and all your nice bank branches around the city? Fogetaboutit, you’ll have to bring those up to Hizzoner’s standards as well (ca-ching, ca-ching.)  And if you don’t, the mayor will penalize you $1 million bucks per location.

It’s not just the economy de Blasio wants to upend.  He wants to do away with charter schools as well.  Despite the fact that public school students in charters outperform their peers in traditional public schools in both math and English, de Blasio wants to eliminate them. Those who gain the most from charters?   Blacks and Hispanics who post a proficiency rate in math of 43 percent compared to only 22 percent at regular public schools.

So how is it a socialist with little understanding and almost no regard for our history, our values, or our capitalist economy, survives in politics at all?

Ironically, it’s the banks, financial institutions, and brokerages on Wall Street that keep his over-taxed, over-regulated city afloat.  It’s a little surprising that Wall Street hasn’t changed its address to Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida where business is appreciated and treated with respect.

Fox legal analyst Andrew Napolitano described DeBlasio’s record this way, “The city is corrupt, his administration is corrupt, his administration is inept [and] he doesn’t even have a majority of support amongst Democratsin New York City, after having been the mayor for six years.”

Given his record as Mayor, the people of New York can be forgiven for laughing out loud when told De Blasio has joined the Democrat parade of candidates for President.

They know he stands zero chance of being elected President.  If they thought otherwise, those guffaws would turn to tears. In fact, DeBlasio may be running for President because his chances of being re-elected Mayor are in serious doubt. Recent polling shows 78% of New Yorkers say DeBlasio should NOT run for President.  NO THANKS Mr. Mayor!

So the question we should all ask, if New Yorkers don’t want him as President, why in the world would the rest of us?
