Prager University: What’s the Best Way to Reduce Poverty?
Too many, particularly among the youth of our country, hold on to the mistaken belief that the only means whereby poverty can be reduced or ideally eliminated must come from the government. We can blame our educators for that. We need only look to Venezuela to clearly see that this is untrue on many levels.
Those who see government as the answer to all of society’s problems utilize the theory known as “zero-sum game” to justify their positions. Under that scenario, the number of dollars that will ever be available is fixed. It is, therefore, necessary for the government to decide how that money should be re-distributed so that everyone winds up with the same amount – this is communism. They believe that to raise people up from poverty, someone else must give up something. This is hardly true.
