Eight people are dead and 11 have been injured after a truck mounted a bicycle path in lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, mowing down cyclists and runners for 17 blocks, then reportedly shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’.

The 29-year-old driver, named by insiders as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, entered the bicycle path at Houston Street at 3.05pm and drove downtown, knocking down victims before smashing into a school bus at at Chambers Street.

Two children and two adults on the bus were injured; they and seven other people are now in hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say others who self-evacuated from the scene may have been injured.

After coming to a stop in his rented Home Depot truck, the terrorist then emerged from waving a paintball gun in one hand and a pellet gun in the other.

He was shot in the stomach by an on-duty NYPD officer who was at the scene and is now in hospital under police supervision.

At a press conference at Police Plaza later, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio condemned the attack as a ‘cowardly act of terror’.

Saipov is originally from Uzbekistan, but immigrated to the US in 2010, and at the time of his arrest he was holding an identification card that listed his home as Tampa, Florida. He is now out of surgery, police said.

According to public records, he worked as a commercial truck driver and has previously lived in both Ohio and New Jersey. It’s unclear how long he had been in New York prior to the attack.

He also has two businesses registered to Ohio: Sayf Motors Inc. was registered in Hamilton County from May 2011, and is located in an apartment in Cincinnati; Bright Auto LLC was registered in Cuyahoga Falls from August 2013 and is located in another apartment.

Bright Auto LLC is an active carrier registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Records show that the trucking company has one truck and one driver.

Authorities have not said where the Home Depot truck involved in the attack was rented from. The company also said it could not confirm if the suspect had rented the vehicle, but they are cooperating with police.

He also has a minor criminal record for traffic offenses in Missouri and Pennsylvania. Court records show that he was stopped in Mount Holly Springs Borough, Pennsylvania, on March 2015.

Saipov, who provided authorities with an address in Patterson, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to a single charge of maximum length of a single trailer and paid fees associated with the citation.

Uzbekistan is not on Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban list.
