N.O.W is fighting mad about Hobby Lobby Supreme Court Decision

PolitiChicks.comIn a recent email to NOW members Chitra Panjabi, the Vice President for membership sent the following message to recipients:  “There is one silver lining to the Supreme Court’s brazenly anti-woman decision in Burwell vs Hobby Lobby: Women and men around the country are quickly turning their anger into action.”

Panjabi continued by encouraging readers to email the President to encourage his use of an Executive Order to go around the Law of the Land. Never mind that these same women were championing the Courts decision when Obamacare was declared Constitutional against a wave of conservative criticism. Suddenly, the NOW leadership and its members have decided that one Supreme Court decision is not fair for all if it does not meet their feminist agenda.

What is most striking about their argument is that they claim that Obamacare calls for all employers to provide birth control without any exceptions. Or as Panjabi put it, “No exceptions, exemptions, or accommodations for religious zealots.” Perhaps the leadership and members of NOW should familiarize themselves with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. (It also would not hurt if they reviewed all 27.)

The First Amendment protects (in part) the right to the free exercise of religion. There is no mention of this right being limited or prohibited once you open a business or hire employees. There is also not one single mention of the word or words “healthcare, insurance, birth control, or abortion” in any of the 27 Amendments to the US Constitution. It is therefore reasonable and fair to argue that healthcare and birth control are not “rights” protected by the Constitution.

Still, the leadership of NOW are attempting to organize members to pressure President Obama to do the following:

“Issue an executive order ensuring that all federal contractors who provide a group insurance plan comply with the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). We want the President to make crystal clear that the U.S. government will not do business with those who discriminate against women. Make no mistake- withholding basic healthcare like birth control from women is bigotry.”

Leaders of NOW and President Obama would do well to remember who and what is specifically protected by the US Constitution. Again, there is a clear protection for religious belief while there is no mention nor protection of healthcare or birth control for citizens. Should President Obama decide to use an Executive Order to follow this liberal agenda it may soon find its way to the Supreme Court where Obama will certainly suffer yet another slap down.
