Unlike the typical lyrics we often hear on the radio today, the rock band Madison Rising is rather known for their patriotic songs like “Right To Bear,” “Honk If You Want Peace,” and “The Star Spangled Banner”. In fact, most of their lyrics are unique messages promoting the principles of liberty, independence, smaller government, and personal responsibility. What a breath of fresh air!
PolitiChicks recently did an EXCLUSIVE interview with lead vocalist, Dave Bray to talk about the band’s unique music style, and about the theme song (see video at bottom of page) they wrote for Sarah Palin’s new television show, “Amazing America”.
PC: So, we all want to know–what’s it like to have your song, ‘Amazing America’ as the theme song for Sarah Palin’s new show?
DB: We’ve been blessed! It was really a lucky break for us. It’s not often that any band gets to do something for television, let alone a little Indy band like ourselves. Definitely a highlight for us!
PC: How did this all come about, anyway?
DB: We had a sit down with Marc from the Sportsman Channel. We weren’t really sure what the meeting would entail–it wasn’t till we were finishing lunch that he popped the idea for the show and asked us to take a crack at writing the song. I started sending rough ideas up the chain and they liked the direction it was heading. After a few more nods, we booked the studio and knocked it out!
PC: Have you ever met Sarah Palin in person?
DB: No, we haven’t – I saw her speak at CPAC but never got the chance to shake her hand and say hello. Maybe now? Who knows!
PC: How long has Madison Rising been together? How did you all meet?
DB: We’ve been playing for about 3 years. Our connections, like most bands these days, were made at online musician sites. It’s like the musicians version of online dating. “I like to play Gibson and PRS guitars.” “My favorite color is blue…long walks on the beach….” I actually found the link to the audition on Facebook. Sam was Craigslist, AJ was Bandmix and Tommy was friended in by AJ. The primary question on all of the ads was “Are you a patriot?” That’s what caught my eye.
PC: All of your music is very patriotic. What inspired you to write and perform these kinds of lyrics for people?
DB: I come from a family of servicemen. Myself, My father and my brother were all US Navy. We all took that same oath and I’m sure that has been part of the inspiration.
The other part was watching the direction of the country. It just seems like we as a people are better than this. Its hard for me to even recognize this nation anymore. I certainly don’t speak the language. I look at what we consider acceptable entertainment for our children and cringe. I’m watching every government run program fail miserably and yet they continue to take from the American people to fund those failing programs. I look at the unconstitutional legislations being passed before they can even be read. We live in a time where the government runs amuck and amongst a people who don’t care because they are being paid not to care. Being a husband and a father to two young lads, it’s all becoming very real and very concerning!
So we chose to write on behalf of those who are willing to work hard for what they need, want and have …who are willing to fight for our freedoms (or what’s left of them) who realize and truly believe that this nation and her people are not yet defeated, and that we are STILL one Nation under God. We choose to write our music for the patriots. It’s needed.
PC: What do you hope to accomplish with your meaningful music?
DB: Not much…just to save a nation from spontaneous combustion, that’s all! (laughs)
I hope to spread a bit of awareness with our message. To wake some folks up! We also hope to seed our youth with a sense of honor, respect and pride for the history and the greatness of this nation. We hope to bring together generations with a common belief and some cool tunes. We also hope to break some of the stereotypes wrapped around the conservative movement. It doesn’t have to be uncool–we can actually have some fun!
PC: Dave, you have a military background, tell us a little about that.
DB: I joined the US Navy at 17 years old. I served as an 8404 Naval Hospital Corpsman. I started out as EMT/EMS in Charleston SC. Went to Field Medical Service School and finished out with 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines (STA PLT). I loved it! I should have stayed in; hindsight 20/20, but I’m not sure I would be doing music if I had–so it all worked itself out. Always does.
PC: What types of venues do you normally play?
DB: We do a good amount of private events. We have played corporate events, NFL halftime shows and NASCAR events. We’ve opened up for Toby Keith, Steppenwolf, Weezer, Kansas, Brantley Gilbert and Skynard to name a few.
It’s always something different for us which is really exciting. We are really blessed to have such a broad fan base which gives us the opportunity to do all these different kinds of events.
PC: Have you been overseas to play for our troops?
DB: Not yet…we’re hoping to do something along those lines soon though. It would be an honor.
PC: Is there anything else you think our readers would want to know about Madison Rising?
DB: We want all the fans and readers to know how much we appreciate all of their support and dedication…not only to us but to our message. We have fans that range from 8 to 80 years old and we are thankful for each and every one of them and their love.
To each and every show, we carry a special flag that was given to us the last time we played FT Campbell KY. It’s become part of the band and hasn’t missed a show since. It carries the tears of many a patriot that has been asked to fold it after the shows. Before each show we pray hard for all the troops and especially their families…we pray that what we are doing is right and just. We pray that we make even the smallest difference that is needed to save this country. And we pray around that flag. It’s pretty special to us.
