Sheila Jackson Lee was in the news last week because she implied in a speech before Congress that the Constitution was written 400 years ago. Her statements, as picked up by the The Washington Free Beacon:
Maybe I should offer a good thanks to the distinguished members of the majority, the Republicans, my chairman and others, for giving us an opportunity to have a deliberative constitutional discussion that reinforces the sanctity of this nation and how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years, operating under a Constitution that clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not.
Shouldn’t a Congresswoman know approximately when our constitution was written? Don’t most educated people know that our constitution was written and adopted in the 1780’s? And Ms. Lee is a very well-educated woman, graduating from Yale University in 1972 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1975. She has served as a municipal judge and a city councilwoman and was first elected to Congress in 1994. She has been re-elected regularly and is in her twentieth year of service. So, how could she make a mistake like that?
Well, it’s not her first. In 2005, Rep. Lee visited the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she asked if the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the American flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong. She raised eyebrows in 2010, when, in another speech before Congress, she said, “Today, we have two Vietnams, North and South, exchanging and working….” No, Rep. Lee, we have one Vietnam. There was this war, you see, and they won.
Rep. Lee opposes the repeal of Obamacare based on her interpretation of the Fifth Amendment (?). She has spoken out about the racism of lily-white hurricane names. In 2011, during Congressional debate over federal spending, she took the floor to denounce racist Pepsi commercials. She also believed that Venezuela under Chavez was our friend and we should sell F-16 parts to that friendly country. Oh, and she also believes that a balanced budget and secret service agents are racist.
Clearly, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is not very well-informed. In fact, her ignorance is only exceeded by that of the voters who put her in office, year after year. For. Twenty. Years.
