SB 1062: Playing Right Into the Liberal Playbook

If the conservative and Tea Party base ever wants to win elections, we need to start playing a little smarter and harder. Take for example this week’s top story about Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. Brewer certainly felt the pressure this week to veto the bill SB 1062 (better known by the liberal media as the “Anti- Gay Law”). However, it was clear just how many people never actually read the bill that was originally passed by then President Bill Clinton in 1996. Like the Defense of Marriage Act, also passed by Bill Clinton, the left seems to ignore facts and just throw mud for outrage. What prompted the broadly worded SB-1062 was in reaction to the recent lawsuits against small business owners by gay couples who felt slighted when told doing business with them would go against the religious beliefs the business owners live by.
What is so interesting and grossly ironic about these suits and the selective outrage by liberals, is the very idea of protecting religious beliefs the left calls “homophobic” only pertains to Christians. If two Muslim employees sue their employer for going against their religious beliefs, that is treated with silence in overage or support with federal agencies filing suit. For example, in May 2013 Star Transport, Inc. was sued by the EEOC on behalf of two Muslim employees because they were asked to ship alcohol to a destination and the employees refused based on their Islamic faith and so Star Transport terminated their employment. The suit with the EEOC was based on a violation to accommodate based on religious beliefs. According to EEOC District Director John P. Rowe, who supervised administrative investigation prior to filing the lawsuit, “Our investigation revealed that Star could have readily avoided assigning these employees to alcohol delivery without any undue hardship, but chose to force the issue despite the employees’ Islamic religion.” However, the problem really is, that not too many people knew of this story because the main stream media didn’t cover it at all.
Based on the above statement by Director Rowe, shouldn’t the small business owners sued by gay couples also fall into that protection? What about the religious beliefs being protected for the individual business owners? Where does the protection and freedom for one outweigh that of another in either of these situations? Why does the protection of religious freedom exist only if it concerns Muslims and not Christians? Or could this all really be about a bigger picture of continued government over reach and involvement in the private lives of its citizens? It would appear the selective outrage by the liberal media is really just a play in the book of politics with the upcoming elections whereby the Democrats are in danger of losing control and must gain leverage at any cost necessary.
Don’t believe me– pay attention to Joe Scarborough on MSNBC. On the show Morning Joe, the panel suggested that what took place in Arizona was just continued bad judgment by the state and used the immigration laws, the non-acknowledgement of the MLK holiday as examples. What was humorous was the suggestion by Mike Barnicle in the news clip in a mocking “dufus” tone that the legislatures who voted for it pass it without reading it first. (Sounds a lot like Obamacare and Nancy Pelosi’s suggestion that “we had to pass the bill to know what’s in it”…) Scarborough then asked former advisor to George W. Bush and No Labels founder Mark McKinnion if these were Democrats, would the media pay attention or care at all. McKinnion then attributed the issue as merely the Republicans need to quit trying to appease their base if they want to win elections. Isn’t that what the Democrats are doing when they play the more liberal base of their party? It simply isn’t covered the same way.
Conservatives really need to revamp their defensive strategies if there is any hope to win in the mid-terms of 2014 and the 2016 Presidential elections. As long as the media is saturated with coverage by and for liberals, it’s up to voters to become more educated and involved with this type of news story. Otherwise they’re just playing right into the hands of the Democrats–kind of like the #WarOnWomen and #Julia–and in the end those right-leaning voters do not show up at the polls.
