“The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount…If we don’t have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the State.” ― Harry S. Truman
Inching Toward the Tipping Point
The Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic order of nuns, have requested a religious exemption from the HHS mandate in Obamacare. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has previously mandated that all employer health plans are to cover contraceptives, abortifacient (abortion-inducing) drugs, and sterilizations without regard to anyone’s religious beliefs or conscience. So they are suing the federal government. A temporary block on the Obama administration was approved through a stay by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, granting them a temporary injunction protecting them from the HHS contraceptive mandate. The punishment for noncompliance with the mandate would be upward of $4.5 million in annual fines for just two of their 30 facilities.
Who are they? A Case in Point
The Little Sisters of the Poor devote their entire lives to serve the elderly poor. Their mission is “. . . to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself”. These dedicated nuns take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. Today they serve the elderly poor across the country from California to Rhode Island.
Obamacare wants this religious order to violate their consciences and the direct teachings of the Catholic Church by demanding that they find insurance coverage that meets its mandates. The DOJ has resisted their efforts to give an exemption and is demanding that,
“. . . they assert in writing what their religious beliefs are and that they permit others to pay for the contraceptive, sterilization and abortion services they do not want, cannot use and profoundly condemn.”
The Obama Administration, however, is not treating all American organizations equally under this law. They have arranged delays and engineered exemptions of the health care laws many times to Congressional staff, union allies and has even exempted employers for a year; he has exempted businesses, insurance companies, labor union, and even certain individuals with cancelled plans.
Usurping the Constitution of the United States of America
Former New Jersey Supreme court Judge Napoltano, in his January 15, 2014 Washington times editorial writes,
“Since the ratification of the 14th Amendment, the natural rights protected in the Bill of Rights generally have been insulated from interference by the states, as well.
All natural rights are of paramount importance to all persons. They are individualized personal gifts from the Creator and have been recognized as such in American law since Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that we are endowed with them by Him.
One of those rights guarantees the free exercise of religion.
Indeed, the Free Exercise Clause in the First Amendment was written to ensure that the new government could not coerce persons to behave differently than their religious views informed their consciences, or to punish them for not conforming to a government-mandated religious orthodoxy.”
It was February of 2013 the Obama Administration announced that the rights of religious conscience for individuals will not be protected under the affordable care act. He meant it.
Violation of Conscience
The seat of your conscience is your heart. It is where decisions are made on the basis of moral judgment—or not. You have the free-will to decide to ignore the voice of your conscience—of right or wrong; good or evil, siding with intents or motives of your flesh’s interests over God’s Biblical mandate. If the latter is chosen, one’s conscience will be defiled, then seared. This overreach of the government involves the entire Christian community, some 70% to 80% of Americans, who identify themselves. Every time one’s conscience is defiled through willful immoral acts contrary to the Word of God, the spiritual penalty results in the diminishing access to fellowship with the Spirit of God. It is that relationship with the Holy Spirit that keeps us in discernment; that allows us to be led by Him to wisdom and safety. As Christians, both our natural well-being and spiritual life depends on this understanding of obedience to our Biblically formed conscience through His grace. Obamacare mandates are intentionally violating Biblical authority.
David Barton, an American evangelical Christian minister, conservative activist, and author, wrote in a December 20, 2013 article for his Wallbuilders Foundation site, America’s Most Biblically-Hostile U. S. President that,
“When one observes President Obama’s unwillingness to accommodate America’s four-century long religious conscience protection through his attempts to require Catholics to go against their own doctrines and beliefs, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Catholic. But that characterization would not be correct. Although he has recently singled out Catholics, he has equally targeted traditional Protestant beliefs over the past four years. So since he has attacked Catholics and Protestants, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Christian. But that, too, would be inaccurate. He has been equally disrespectful in his appalling treatment of religious Jews in general and Israel in particular. So perhaps the most accurate description of his antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews, and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as anti-Biblical. And then when his hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor. In fact, there have been numerous clearly documented times when his pro-Islam positions have been the cause of his anti-Biblical actions.”
Will there be a Holy War?
Our Constitution and Bill of Rights protected the free exercise of religion from such government usurpations of our conscience. The Constitution is the law of the land, and yet it is being resisted by this administration. To win the battle there must be unity of the entire Christian community to resist the usurping of our Constitutional rights, which protects our compliance to the Bible authority, and the attempts by this administration to violate our conscience. I perceive a holy war of sorts—one being provoked by this administration. And one that I think is intentional.
