The Age of Misguided Compassion

347721“We have guided missiles and misguided men.”

With that statement, Martin Luther King, Jr., perfectly summed up my feelings about the recent happenings in Washington, DC.  None of the shameful atrocities that have occurred surprised me in the least –  each represent a natural progression in man’s desire to denigrate the natural law, distort it, and otherwise trample on truth in deference to the ever-popular notions of “freedom of choice” and “personal rights.”

Although no actual missiles were directed toward the United States, the fabric of American society is still quivering from the symbolic blows it sustained as the result of what I like to think is misguided compassion.  You hear the buzzword all the time.  If you find abortion morally reprehensible, you don’t have compassion for women.  If you don’t give your stamp of approval to gay “marriage,” you don’t have compassion for members of the LGBTQ community.  If you support the enactment of voter ID laws, you don’t have compassion for minorities.  The list is endless – and every single item liberals tack onto that list is completely bogus.

DOMA Ruling: As Antonin Scalia wrote in his dissent, “…to defend traditional marriage is not to condemn, demean, or humiliate those who would prefer other arrangements, any more than to defend the Constitution of the United States is to condemn, demean, or humiliate other constitutions….To question its high-handed invalidation of a presumptively valid statute is to act (the majority is sure) with the purpose to “disparage,” “injure,” “degrade,” “demean,” and “humiliate” our fellow human beings, our fellow citizens, who are homosexual. All that, simply for supporting an Act that did no more than codify an aspect of marriage that had been unquestioned in our society for most of its existence–indeed, had been unquestioned in virtually all societies for virtually all of human history. It is one thing for a society to elect change; it is another for a court of law to impose change by adjudging those who oppose it hostes humani generis, enemies of the human race.”

Throughout history, the discussion about marriage inevitably led to the welfare of children.  Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, noted that “in the decision overturning DOMA, children were mentioned only five times, and in every instance it was the children of homosexual partners who were cited.  Never once were the offspring of heterosexual unions mentioned, even though every child who was ever born sprung from such unions. All that seems to matter to the high court are the alleged rights of individuals.”

Misguided compassion.

HHS Mandate: On Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services issued the final rules of its infamous abortifacient mandate.  There are some changes in the rules worth noting, but at a glance they are not satisfactory.  The final rules still do not extend exemptions or accommodations to private, for-profit employers, a point of contention with previous drafts.  As a Catholic not of the Kathleen Sebelius variety, I am justly indignant at this blatant callousness toward protection of conscience.

Contraception has been classified as a Class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization.  The use of contraceptives has been linked in the meta analysis from the Mayo Clinic in 2006 to an increase in a woman’s risk of contracting breast cancer.  The use of contraceptives has also been linked to uterine, liver, and cervical cancers, and has been identified as causing the death of women who developed blood clots (an increasing occurrence).  Furthermore, many contraceptive pills cause abortions by thinning out the uterine lining so that a newly-conceived human being cannot implant, thus causing the child to die.  But my fellow Catholics and all those of good conscience are the ones who hate women?

Misguided compassion.

The Bottom Line: The above were just two of the most egregious “guided missiles” propelled to wipe out the foundation of society – all the “guided missiles” being hurled at the American populace are intertwined and include a very sinister bottom line.  Father Paul Marx, one of the pro-life movement’s strongest leaders, and one of the few in the ranks to have visited more than 30 countries, said years ago:

In every nation, bar none, contraception has led to abortion—and from abortion to infanticide, the prelude to full-blown euthanasia! Once the purposes of sex are torn loose from procreation and the family, the homosexual thrust rears its ugly head, teen pregnancies and abortions sky-rocket, VD burgeons out of control, the divorce rate escalates, the birthrate falls, while the barnyard approach to birth control called sterilization becomes commonplace. Soon we see the swift disintegration of the family.

The “misguided men” are striking at the heart of civilization with their “guided missiles” and systematically weakening every building block of a good and just society, which is why the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called for a second Fortnight for Freedom this year (ending on July 4th).  During this time, the faithful are encouraged to engage in a two-week campaign of prayer and action.  What better occasion could there be to pray for the reinstatement of true compassion in society and the salvation of the souls of “misguided men.”

As pastor Martin Niemöller said regarding the Nazis’ rise to power, “First they came for the socialists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.  Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.  Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.  Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.”  Speak now – pray now – or forever hold your peace.
