Paula Deen and Al Sharpton’s Double Standard

Paula DeenPaula Deen has had a rough couple of weeks. Less than two weeks ago, court documents were released showing that Deen had admitted to using racial slurs in the past.  Since the release of those documents the fallout surrounding her past comments has been epic.  Her public relations team made a bad situation worse when they released a choppy apology video that felt anything but sincere, promptly pulled the video, and then immediately released a second video which felt more sincere but the damage had already been done.  Following the apology videos The Food Network announced that it was not renewing her contract and she was subsequently dropped by Smithfield Ham, Caesar’s Casinos, Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penney, Kmart and Home Depot.  Also, Novo Nordisk and QVC are currently taking a “step-back” from their relationship with Deen and the future of the rest of her endorsement deals continues to hang in the balance.  So it came as a bit of a surprise when the man who seems to call everyone racist, Al Sharpton, came out in support of Deen.

TMZ caught up with the Reverend Sharpton at LAX and asked him his feelings on Paula Deen and the controversy surrounding her past comments.  In the video he said that “A lot of us have in the past said things we have regretted saying years ago” and when he was asked if he thought the treatment she was receiving was fair he said, “You can’t deal with what is fair and not fair till we see the outcome of the present circumstances she’s accused of…not something 20 years ago.”  When I heard this I was more than a little shocked.  This is the man who along with his MSNBC buddy Chris Matthews calls anyone who disagrees with President Obama a racist. So how is it that this little southern, white lady could fall under his good graces?  Four little words–she’s an Obama supporter.

alsharptonAl Sharpton will openly support a white person who admits to using racial slurs because she is a liberal Democrat but he will go on a rant against any person who disagrees with President Obama simply because they don’t agree with what our African-American (or rather half African-American) President has to say.  Now don’t get me wrong – on this issue I actually agree with Al Sharpton (shocking I know).  We shouldn’t judge Paula Deen for admitting that she said something twenty plus years ago in private. He is also right in saying that “a lot of us” (more like all of us) “have in the past said things we regretted”. The fact that all these companies are dropping her for a single word is ridiculous and shows the type of race-baiting culture that has been created in our country.  However, it is the likes of Al Sharpton who have created such a culture so when he comes out in support of a liberal who has been vilified because of the culture he created, so forgive me if I am little unsympathetic.

One thing that his comments show, is that for him and many liberal Democrats, race has never been the issue and they know it.  Race has simply been an easy way for them to win the narrative against conservatives.  Anytime a person, especially a news person or politician, yells the word “racist” it is almost impossible to disagree with them because anyone who defends a purported racist is automatically labeled a racist as well.  It is the perfect weapon to use against anyone on the right because no one in today’s media saturated society wants to be labeled a racist because as we have seen with Paula Deen it can and will destroy their life.

Still it is up to us as conservatives to continue to point out the double standard that is so widely seen in the world of conservative race baiting.  We need to make sure that the truth is known because as we all know the mainstream media or better yet the “Democrat run” media will never let the real truth about this issue be known.
