The Teflon President

20130514-072433Lately I have been doing a lot of thinking about President Obama and the current rash of scandals we’ve been hearing about on the news.  I know that many people see this as an opportunity to impeach Obama and finally close a chapter on one of the worse presidents in history. As much as his scandals may appear to have hurt Obama’s image and his administration as a whole, I have to say that Obama is going nowhere.  He will serve out his term as president and will probably be looked upon as one of America’s favorite presidents.

I know; you’re wondering how I can say such a crazy thing in light of such blatant corruption and tyranny.  Well, it’s simple.  We’re dealing with a majority of Americans who don’t care about or don’t know what this administration is doing. How else can you explain Obama’s reelection while in the midst of the Benghazi scandal, Fast & Furious and a pathetic economy? The people who support Obama don’t see him as the cause of the troubles in this country.

Rush Limbaugh summed it up perfectly with his Limbaugh Theorem. Basically, President Obama will never be held accountable for the problems in this nation.  Because he is in constant campaign mode, Obama is seen as a person rallying against the problems and not the legislator that is the cause of the problems.  When Obama claims that he didn’t know about the IRS discrimination or the AP phone records scandal; it’s not because he’s too stupid or incompetent.  He and many high-ranking members of his administration have positioned themselves to give the appearance to be unaware of what is going on.  That way he’s and his cabinet members are never at fault when trouble strikes.  He can claim to be appalled by what happened and promise to get to the bottom of it.   Then they’ll make sure it’s some low level underling who takes the fall.  That is the only way a man who was already set to resign can take the fall for the IRS scandal, and that is why it makes sense to some supporters that Eric Holder can investigate the phone hacking of James Rosen of FOX news; even though it was Holder who gave to order to spy on Rosen to begin with.

Now I can hear it from some people saying that this time it will be different.  The Media will no longer cover for Obama because of how they were treated by the justice department.  Yes, the mainstream media is having a moment of “uncontrolled journalism” by reporting that the Tea Party groups were harassed when applying for their tax exempt status.  But it’s only because the media is upset that the Associated Press was thoroughly wronged by this administration.

I jokingly said to some friends that all Obama has to do to get back in the media’s good graces is to wink and smile. Then the media will come running back to him to bask in the glow of his awesomeness. Apparently I wasn’t that far from the truth.  Obama has been having a couple of secret meetings with members of the press lately.  Is he getting his talking points in order?  My gut feeling tells me that’s the case.  Expect the media to fawn over the greatness that is Obama once again and call anyone who disagrees with him a bunch of racists or claim Republicans are on a witch-hunt.  In fact, it’s happening now.

After having a political argument with a progressive relative, it occurred to me that President Obama reminds me of John Gotti.  No matter how much scandal surrounds him, nothing sticks to him.  He always comes out clean and smelling like a rose to his die-hard supporters. No matter how many times we point out the obvious scandals, we’re considered the ones on a witch-hunt or racist for even disagreeing with Obama.  Concrete evidence is always demanded as proof for our claims but when presented with concrete proof, those die hard supporters or low information voters constantly find a way to justify Obama’s actions.

John Gotti likewise had strong supporters who assumed the prosecution was on a witch-hunt.  He was finally brought down by Sammy Gravano, partly because Gravano had all the information on Gotti that finally erased his “Teflon Don” status.  But also there were prosecutors and lawmakers willing to do their job.  Obama doesn’t have any Sammy Gravanos willing to turn on him.  If he does, they’re being dismissed by lawmakers and the media who prefer to put politics above truth.   I know there are some lawmakers that toy with the idea of impeachment, but I don’t see anyone of them with the drive to actually push for it.  Their reputation and political status is more important than justice.  In the meantime, Obama will continue to be the “Teflon President” much to the dismay of many conservatives.
