Celebs Want the “Cool Guy” in the WH (Even Though the Cool Guy Wants to Tax Them Into Oblivion!)

“Anita Gunn” is our resident Hollywood Insider PolitiChick.  Anita works in the entertainment industry and will be giving inside scoops, offering her unique perspective what it’s like being a Closeted Conservative in Hollywood.  Anita has changed her name to protect the innocent (meaning herself and/or her career…).  Editor

Because I work in the movie industry, I am often asked this question over and over by fellow conservatives who work in the “real world”:  “Why do celebrities always support Democrats?”

I thought I’d try and tackle that question (next week I’ll tackle the question as to why Jews support Democrats – but one crazy subject at a time!).

Since I was once a liberal and have worked in the entertainment industry most of my adult life, I believe I have a unique insight into what makes celebrities tick.  But first let’s recap what the crazy celebs have been up to this election cycle:

We’ve got Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria pledging their allegiance to Obama (since pledging the allegiance to the American flag is so uncool and yesteryear).

We’ve got Sean Penn campaigning with Hugo Chavez.

We’ve got Samuel L. Jackson yelling at us to “wake the f*ck up” and vote for Obama.

We’ve got Madonna announcing to a crowd of thousands: “So y’all better vote for f*cking Obama, OK? For better or for worse, all right, we have a black Muslim in the White House, OK? Now that is some sh*t. That’s some amazing sh*t.”

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. So the obvious question is; what’s in it for them?

First of all, celebrities clearly have a lot of guilt about making so much money without having to work hard for it. Therefore they embrace causes such as Occupy Wall Street to show their fans that they’re “one of them.” I know it seems counter-intuitive that celebrities are on board with the 99% vs. 1% (considering they fall into the latter category), but they are exempt from being accused of being part of the evil 1% because they “care” about the “little people.”

Remember–these people are making millions, so it’s easy for them to want to give away other people’s (aka my) money. They know that whatever the government takes away still leaves them with plenty to continue living the good life.  After all, what is the difference between making $50 million per year vs. $25 million per year? When you make that kind of money, losing a few million here and there really doesn’t change your lifestyle all that much.  So celebs feel good about showing their support for the “little people,” then drive off in their Bentleys and straight into their gated mansions.

Secondly, most (if not all) celebs have money managers, so they have no clue how much they are paying in taxes. They get paid as corporations; therefore they pay fewer taxes and can take advantage of more loopholes than your average doctor, lawyer or small business owner.

I do find it ironic that the same celebs who claim others should pay more in taxes go to places like Canada to make movies, where they can take advantage of tax breaks. Hypocrisy anyone? But I digress.

Then there is the “cool” factor. After all, Obama is perceived as cool (although I personally don’t find bike helmets and mom jeans cool – but that’s just me). Hey he admitted to snorting coke and smoking pot (“choom!”) so he’s obviously cool! Meanwhile, Mitt Romney doesn’t even drink coffee. What a square! Celebs always want to be associated with the cool kids, not the nerds. So celebs are only too happy to help the cool guy win.

Finally, celebrities do not, as a rule, follow politics. Most entertainment people get their news from The Daily Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, the LA Times, the NY Times and Rolling Stone. Not exactly hot beds of conservatism. And they are surrounded by like-minded people so they are never challenged to change their views.

Comedian Adam Carolla, who doesn’t openly identify as a conservative but holds many conservative views, told the Daily Caller, “it ain’t easy being right-of-center in liberal Hollywood.”

Carolla went on to say:

If you’re conservative in Hollywood, you’re on a list of people who need to be put in their place.  If you’re Woody Allen, you do what you want. If you’re Spike Lee, you can go ahead and tweet out the address of the guy who the New Black Panthers put a bounty on and there’s no repercussions, because Hollywood will decide who’s guilty and who’s not guilty. Now, if Tom Selleck tweeted out the address of a black guy who the new Klan had put a bounty on, there’d be repercussions against Tom Selleck. That much I can promise you.

But there is good news. Zombie of PJ Media talks about how the whole “fair share,” “play by the rules,” and let’s tax “millionaires and billionaires,” thing can be taken too far. Jon Lovitz and a few other left-leaning Hollywood types are finding their breaking point:

The “Lovitz Curve” argues that that many in people in Hollywood and other affluent, left-leaning areas of America enjoy, support, and appreciate rhetoric that rails against “corporate fat cats” and the greedy “1 percent.” However, the confiscation of wealth via high taxes will eventually include the Hollywood types. Wealthy West Coast liberals will cheer on and swoon over any politician who engages in overheated class warfare rhetoric — up until a certain point, when it suddenly dawns on them that the rhetoric is aimed directly at themselves.

I can’t wait for that day of reckoning! In the meantime, for closeted conservatives like me working in Obamamania Hollywood, there is a safe haven. I belong to a large and ever growing conservative Hollywood underground group, founded by a prominent conservative celebrity. We meet regularly at a local bar (where you have to be on a list to get in – so Hollywood!) There we can openly share ideas in complete safety. We also attend events featuring speakers such as Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Dick Cheney and Justice Scalia (and that’s just this year!) But if I told you any more about this fellowship group and who their members are, I’d have to kill you.

Anita Gunn

California PolitiChick "Anita Gunn" is a closeted conservative working the entertainment business. Anita started at a major talent agency, assisting a well-known music agent, and is now a VP at a major movie studio. Anita grew up in a very liberal Jewish home, and bought the Utopian dream of a one world government and social justice for all. Anita did her best to "save the planet," pontificating about how the evil Republicans and greedy corporations were destroying the earth. 9/11 shook Anita's foundation and everything that she believed. By the time Obama burst into the scene in 2007, Anita was morphing into a conservative. Of course, coming out of the closet as a conservative in the entertainment industry is pretty much career suicide, she says, so in 2011, the name "Anita Gunn" was born. Anita has done commentary about the culture war on such radio shows as the Dr. Gina Show, Real Side with Joe Messina and Socialism is not an Option on Blog Talk Radio. Anita started a secret conservative Facebook group which has 1000 active members, and is part of another secret group of artists who behind such videos as Cruz Against the Machine. There are still some remnants from Anita's liberal days, including the love of Astrology and wearing platforms and bellbottoms--and yet signs of her conservative switch can be seen by her ever-present gun necklace. Anita says her goal is to help rebrand and hip up the conservative movement to include more artists, musicians, actors, gays and minorities and young people. Anita's belief is that if she saw the light, there are others who would also embrace the conservative movement, if only just shown the way. Follow Anita Gunn on Twitter @AnitaGunn1.
