Fall Season Family Getaway: Riley’s Farm, Oak Glen, California
Located in the beautiful mountains of Oak Glen, Riley’s Farm is the ancestral home of James Patrick and Mary Riley. James is also the creator/star of PBS pre-Revolutionary War series Courage, New Hampshire, filmed entirely on the farm.
The website states,
Riley’s Farm is a working apple orchard and living history farm featuring pick-your-own fruit, living history education, dinner theater, group banquet facilities, and extended, historically-themed overnight stays.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
There are many fun (and slyly educational) events and activities that the entire family can enjoy. All year round, you can pick fruit from their acres of orchards. In September-October, you can pick a variety of apples, pears, strawberries, and soon, pumpkins. They also have archery, tomahawk throwing, candle-dipping, and lots of fun places to explore.
A perfect way to kick off the fall season is by attending Riley’s annual dinner theater presentation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” From their site,
“Join us this October for Riley’s Farm’s biggest event of the year!
When you arrive, enjoy our homemade appetizer soup of corn chowder or pumpkin. Hop on the hayride and take a trip in the countryside with several of the Sleepy Hollow townsfolk. You may meet the wealthy farmer, Baltus Van Tassel, and maybe even his lovely daughter, Katrina. Enjoy the company of the country blade, Brom Bones, and perhaps make the acquaintance of the local school master, Ichabod Crane. Watch the characters come alive on stage, in a play that is broken up into three acts. And through the whole evening participate in a variety of country contests. But be for warned, there is rumor of a Headless Horseman on the prowl, and it is said he will ride passed the house by night.”

And for those of us who are cooking-challenged, there are few places better to spend the holidays–especially Thanksgiving-than at Riley’s Farm. Not only for the food and fellowship, but it’s also the perfect setting to take pictures for your upcoming Christmas card photos. After speaking of, the Christmas season at Riley’s is simply, elegantly magical. In addition to getting your Christmas tree, you and your family will enjoy Christmas-themed activities and shows.
Here’s an impromptu interview I did with James Patrick Riley last December at his farm:
