Our Leaders: Worse than Neville Chamberlain

Screen Shot 2014-04-03 at 9.00.44 AM“If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not so costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance for survival. There may be a worse case.  You may have to fight when there is no chance of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” ~ Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill is one of my favorite leaders to listen to and read among others.  There was one so-called leader I don’t know as much about, and I should, because it was because of his appeasement and the Munich agreement in which Britain and France allowed the Czech region to be ceded to Germany, that the British found themselves at war with the Nazis.  Of course I’m talking about Neville Chamberlain, and while I know the basics, I’ve never had time, or really the desire to learn more about him. Besides, I suppose I’ve always been willing to see the ‘good guy win’, and always focused on the strength and courage of people instead of cowardice or malice in others.

Our country from the beginning has had a lot of good men of strong convictions, character, and leadership.  Throughout America’s History there have been quite a few who weren’t perfect, but had a genuine love and respect for things such as individual liberty and freedom.  And because they had actually fought to preserve the same, they continued to serve; to ensure they formed our government to uphold and protect those rights which they knew were God given when they embedded them in our Constitution.

One of the first and foremost basic duties of our Federal government has always been to protect the people from enemies foreign and domestic.  While we’ve not always had the strongest leaders or who had served in battles themselves, for the first 200 years most leaders genuinely cared about and took pride in America’s exceptionalism, and appreciated those who fought to protect our freedoms.  It’s not been until the last 40 or so years that much of the progressive agenda has accomplished the reversal of thought of so many Americans, to where they were content to elect leaders who have never served in combat, yet think they can make the rules for war, and keep our country safe.  All of this has led to our historic choice to have Barack Obama, who while at Harvard University called America mean spirited,  as our leader of not just one term, but two.

The Obamas have never been shy about the feelings they have for the United States. After all, Michelle has never been “more proud of this country” until Barack was elected.  Seems that many in our government feel no real convictions when it comes to upholding their end of their sworn oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution either.  Too many times over the past few years we have had to fight our ‘representatives’ over basic yet God given rights such as our 2nd Amendment, our religious rights, the right to redress our government, the right to freedom of speech and association and for bloggers– the freedom of the press, which at the time of our founders, men like James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay who were the bloggers of their day.

We’ve fought the Gang of 8 and others on so called Immigration Reform, and the most glaring part of the problem which is ignored, the fact that the majority of illegals have no allegiance to our Country, no regard for our laws and we are losing our sovereignty.  So while our federal government spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy SUV’s for border patrols, in Albania, yet sue our own States for enforcing immigration laws, our representatives continue to push for reform of laws which are already on the books, laws which millions of legal immigrants have been obeying, yet leaving our southern border wide open.

I have been writing a lot about the transformation of our military for the past year. Everything from attempting to strip traditions from our military, social experimentation, to the firing of an unheard of number of Generals and senior level Commanders, leaving Americans behind to fight off terrorists alone without allowing assets to go in to help in Benghazi which resulted in the deaths of 4 including 2 hero former Navy SEALS.  There was Extortion 17 which killed many members of SEAL Team Six- the same Team which Obama took liberty in giving Hollywood producers sensitive information about after they raided and killed Osama Bin Laden and Joe Biden outed the Team only days after the raid.  There’s destructive and dangerous ROE’s which tell our troops that they can’t shoot unless shot at first, and if they don’t follow the rules, they can risk doing time in prison for ‘murder’ of sworn enemies while at war.

Our government has been arming Islamic terrorists who are calling themselves “Freedom Fighters” in Syria. These are made up of Al Qaida and other jihadist groups, yet our President and others have been giving them aid and weapons, supposedly to fight against Assad, yet who have been murdering Christians. Now it seems that Obama is considering arming them with man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS).

We know from the past what different leaders did with different crises.  Churchill fought and demanded, “Never, never, never give up.”  Ronald Reagan fought and showed that peace through strength works as he demanded “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Now what are our leaders doing when our country faces incredible threats and still have our military fighting in the Middle East among places?  Well, for one, they’re cutting the size of our Military.  Not only will the proposed cuts make our forces the smallest in numbers of troops since just before the U.S. entered the Second World War, but Obama announced to the world that “We are moving towards a leaner military.”

He dismissed Russia’s actions in the Ukraine as a “regional power”, but then said “I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan.”   And yet, he still believes in a nuke free America.

It was reported last week that Chuck Hagel announced that the Navy will end the purchase of Tomahawk Land Attack (TLAM) cruise missiles in 2016 without a replacement.  According to reports, Obama is seeking to abolish two highly successful missile programs that experts say have helped the U.S. Navy maintain military superiority for the past several decades. The Tomahawk missile program is set to be completely eliminated by 2016 and the Navy will also be forced to cancel its acquisition of the well-regarded and highly effective Hellfire missiles in 2015.

Rep. Randy Forbes (R., Va.), a member of House Armed Services Committee said,

The administrations proposed budget dramatically under-resources our investments in munitions and leaves the Defense Department with dangerous gaps in key areas, like Tomahawk and Hellfire missiles… Increasing our investment in munitions and retaining our technological edge in research and development should be a key component of any serious defense strategy.

Nearly 100 of these missiles are used each year on average, which means because of the cuts, the Tomahawk stock will be totally empty by around 2018.  Navy experts and retired officials fear that the elimination of the Tomahawk and Hellfire systems—and the lack of a battle-ready replacement—will jeopardize the U.S. Navy’s abilities to fight as effectively as it faces increasingly advanced militaries from North Korea to the Middle East.

North Korea, for instance, has successfully tested multi-stage rockets and other ballistic missiles in recent months. Experts say this is a sign that the Navy’s defensive capabilities will become all the more important in the Pacific in the years to come.

So while our Military is being gutted, it was reported that the U.S. government is giving Russia free military equipment which has been used to train American troops, even after Obama announced sanctions against Moscow and a suspension in military engagement over the invasion and occupation of Ukraine.

And then there are the most elite of our armed forces, those Silent Professionals who have been the very highly trained, most adaptable and specialized units that our Government has depended on for decades. They are silent professionals because their presence in any place is not confirmed, but they have always been America’s first line of defense all over the world.

According to a recent report,  the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) at MacDill Air Force Base has a new mission, starting with the motto ”You can’t surge trust.”

Daniel Pipes writing in his recent National Review Online article mentioned a part of the Operating Concept for special operations forces (SOF):

The Special Operations Forces Operating Concept captures the essence of the SOF heritage as it could be – as it should be in the year 2020 and beyond. The concept moves beyond the first decade of the 21st Century, when SOF primarily supported large-scale contingency operations by conducting counterterrorism operations to find, capture, or kill our adversaries. Although of great value to the Nation, these operations were never intended to be decisive. Operating through the Global SOF Network in support of our Geographic Combatant Commanders and Chiefs of Mission, SOF now have the opportunity to achieve strategic outcomes by working with and through interagency and foreign partners to understand and influence relevant populations.”

While Mr. Pipes did get an update and response from SOCOM’s Public Affairs Officer, reiterating the more diplomatic duties our Special Forces have always done since the inception, the Officer mentioned,

As the US defense budget is cut and the military becomes smaller, the importance of partner nations to the US defense strategy will grow. ADM McRaven realizes how important partner-nations will be to the US in the future and he coined the phrase, “You can’t surge trust.” What he means is relationships with partner nations are based on trust and we cannot wait for an emergency to take place and expect to build trust and relationships with partner nations overnight. Now is the time to build that trust and those relationships.”

To be fair, our Special Forces will still be doing their utmost to be our first defense, again, according to the response, “US SOF has the world’s premier counterterrorism capability and it will maintain that capability. Additionally, the rest of the force proved in September 2001 that it can change its focus and successfully conduct direct, kinetic, combat operations as quickly as the nation needs it to change.”

However, while September 11, 2001 may have lit the fire to finally hit back hard in what was once known as “the war on terror”, too many people, especially in our government have ignored the ideology of the enemy- Islam.  The destructive acts of terror perpetuated on the US that day were a continuation of other acts of terror and planning done by Muslims.

As I wrote in my recent three part series on Islam in America and in other articles about where and how our military has been used by this administration with and without support of our Congress, Islam is the ideology we’ve been at war with, yet it is welcomed throughout our own government, in the highest intelligence offices, and throughout our military.  With the events which are still happening in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia, we are NOT finished with this war, and to cut back, announce to the world we are cutting back, arming Islamic sects and others, and cutting back on those who protect us, our leaders seem to be like a Neville Chamberlain on steroids.

Finally, as I was finishing this article, there was the breaking news that was yet another shooting at Ft Hood.  Reports are still mainly speculation at this point, and I’m sure as always much will be coming out in days to come. However, even if this is just considered an “act of workplace violence” or as early reports are saying, an argument (sure, as most arguments escalate into 4 dead and more than a dozen wounded) just keep in mind that there have also been reports from April 1st about the FBI searching for a recent Army recruit believed to be planning a “Fort Hood-inspired jihad against U.S. soldiers.”  I’m not saying these are related, but we can be sure that this will not be the only incident since our enemies know our men and women aren’t armed when on base.

Until we find another Reagan, who is willing to once again trust in our troops and show the world that we mean business, there will be no peace for weakness and appeasement. This is not the United States I grew up learning about, yet, our leaders are not like Neville Chamberlain. They’re worse because they have not only have appeased the enemy, they seem to be getting their marching orders from them.  They are fighting against us, and destroying those who stand between us and them.
