Harry Reid is just like the liquid metal, shape shifting T-1000 terminator in the 1991 film Terminator 2-Judgement Day. He just keeps coming back bringing more chaos and destruction to our republic! With the Democrat party reeling from the Obamacare disaster, Reid had to think of anything to divert the public’s attention away from the daily onslaught of shocking news. Having been knocked to the ground since October 1 when the roll-out began, Reid and his party have staggered and stumbled trying to fight back against poll numbers that are in free fall. Obama’s numbers are at an all time low in performance and likeability and they are in panic mode. But like the T-1000; just when you think it’s over and he has ended up in a liquid heap of metal on the floor, Harry finds new life, gathers his minions together and strikes a blow once more.
In an unprecedented move in the Senate, Harry Reid pushed through a vote of 52-48 to eliminate filibusters for most Presidential nominees, thus curtailing any leverage that the Republicans might have had in blocking questionable choices. This nuclear option paves the way for any number of radical appointees to take a foothold in the government.
This rule change means that executive office appointments and federal judicial nominees can be pushed through by a simple majority of senators, not the 60 vote supermajority that has been required for over 200 years. It is one way of eliminating debate when it doesn’t go your way.
It is ironic that most of these Dem Senators who voted for this were rabidly on the record not long ago when the shoe was on the other foot and the Republicans held the majority in the Senate. Noise was being made that the Republicans might do this, and Obama, Reid, Feinstein, Kerry, etc, etc, were hysterical over it. It was “going against the wishes of the Founding Fathers”, “changing something that has not been touched for 200 years!” On and on went the objections. For whatever reason, the Republicans never did it. So now the trigger has been pulled, but Reid better be careful what he wishes for. Power has a way of shifting in Washington and he and the Democrats could be ruing this day when the Republicans are in control.
This is just another move in the world of Barack Obama where if he can’t get his way, he will just write an executive order or change the rules as he sees fit. Even though previous majorities have considered this possibility, none has done so in a unilateral move on such a major change.
So now we can look on as impotent Republicans watch radical nominees being confirmed while they sit in silence. One of the judicial nominees for the D.C. circuit court that had been filibustered by the Republicans; Patricia Millett; came up for a re-consideration vote under the new rules. In a vote of 55-43, the Senate agreed to go ahead with her nomination. It was a slam dunk, only one team gets to play, the other sits on the sidelines.
One can’t help but wonder if somehow Harry Reid brought this up and pushed it through so quickly because of the noise Sen. Lindsey Graham has been making for the past few months. He has been speaking out publicly and loudly about gathering support in the Senate to block any Presidential nominees until answers were given on Benghazi. Could it be that Reid wanted to put a stop to any more probing into Benghazi? This nuclear option move sure put an end to that.
Is it any wonder that the American people are at the end of their rope when they see the circus that is Washington D.C.? We have been in chaos before, but I don’t remember it ever being as destructive or dangerous as this. At least in the past we could tell the good guys from the bad guys and we always managed to root out the bad and right the ship. Now it seems as though everyone is suspect and the American people have to look on helplessly as we see our nation “fundamentally transformed” before our eyes and watch as rules and law are completely ignored or changed on a whim.
There is no doubt that the ideological Democrats and Obama will do anything to get their way. Never count them out or turn your back because they will regenerate. They play to win and no option is off the table. That should frighten all of us.
Where is Arnold when we need him?
