Education in our nation’s beginning was mostly done at home. The main textbooks found in the earliest years were the Blue Back Speller, the New England Primer and the Bible. By the late 1700s, public schools were instituted so everyone could have a chance to learn to read and write.
By the mid-late 1800s there were nearly two-dozen textbooks used in public schools. Titles such as, The New Instructor from 1803, Beauties of the Bible from 1806, Instructions for the Better Government & Organization of Common Schools from 1819, A Common-School Grammar of the English Language, 1871 and Bible Readings For Schools, 1897, which included:
In preparing the pupil for citizenship the school should not ignore the fact that civil oath or affirmation has been made part of the civil code. It is considered indispensable in civil causes, and is always administered to jurors and witnesses, and to public servants on assuming the duties of office. It involves a solemn appeal to God as the author of truth and right, as well as a promise to speak the truth and to do what is right. It presupposes belief in God and knowledge of man’s relation to his Maker.
These were public elementary school courses, which were taught up until the mid to late 1960’s. Higher education was not much different. In fact, 106 of our nation’s universities and colleges were started on the Christian faith, to be higher centers of theological studies and seminaries.
How did we get to the point in our current system of education in which both elementary schools and colleges have drifted so far away from the founding principles of education in the our earlier history? In a word, education has been co-opted by progressivism.
Marxists knew that if progressives dominated the educational system and used their influence to slowly push a Godless progressive worldview the future society would be ready to accept more communist based agendas. Those taught in the ideals of the likes of Marx, Alinsky and others knew that it was not necessary for students to consciously convert to socialist thinking; successive generations would gradually be indoctrinated in the principles of progressivism. By the mid 1960’s and during the time since, any trace of Biblical truths have been steadily been erased and American history has been white washed. Replacing the enduring values, which America was built on, have been moral relativism, ethics, multiculturalism and social justice and activism. These have been taught to younger age groups as these ideals have slowly become accepted and promoted by far left political groups like the National Education Association, teachers unions and even the federal government’s Department of Education.
Studies have shown that in our colleges, professors are biased against conservatives in hiring or advancement of anyone who doesn’t reflect their own “diverse” views. In August 2012 the Washington Times printed an article about a survey which shows that conservatives represent a smaller minority on college and university campuses. As more research shows, the gap is widening as more in academia are moving further to the left. Liberal bias is also evident in political donations from University staff and professors. At 12 schools country wide, heavily favored towards Democrat candidates ($1,094,324.00 total for 2008) by professors compared to donations to Republicans ($91,302.00) the numbers were even more extreme in 2010 elections, is only a small sample indicating the huge leftist movement in our schools.
If professors are in such large part liberal in their beliefs in science, politics, social issues and foreign policy, it leads one to believe that so many of our youth would gravitate towards the same beliefs. How do students demonstrate a bias towards those who aren’t considered tolerant because of differing socio/political views?
People such as David Horowitz, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and even Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren have all experienced freedom of speech issues when speaking or as in Limbaugh’s case being chosen as one of Missouri’s Hall of Fame recipients. Leftists who claim tolerance for all show the most intolerance towards fellow students and guests on the sole grounds of not agreeing with them.
God has long been absent from our public schools, colleges and universities. Something has had to take His place. We now have such things as post modernism, anti-American/Western values, and multiculturalism and hyper sensitive atmosphere where even a piece of food can be confiscated as a threat, and students having to undergo trauma counseling for being subject to perceived violence, and having little army men on cupcakes at a school birthday party being seen as “insensitive”.
When President Andrew Jackson signed legislation for the establishment of the Department of Education, it was as a mission to improve American education at local and state levels only. The first commissioner had a staff of three and two rooms in Washington D.C to run the agency. We now spend billions every year, as more students are being graduated than ever before not knowing how to read or do simple arithmetic. It has been a success as far as progressivism, but at a detriment to generations of students and society as a whole. The Founding fathers would be shocked at what passes for education these days, but sadly not many people are outraged enough to do something about it.
