Maybe It’s Not Paranoia

Gut-wrenching fear would wake me up many nights as a young teenager. Unable to go back to sleep, I would lay in my bed trembling, as I tried to recount the nightmare that had induced my panicked-state.

Reading has always been my escape, but also the origin of many of my fears. There are two books that made such an indelible impression on my young mind, that I can still recall large portions. As an adult, I realize that many of the beliefs of the authors were extreme and I do not prescribe to all of their opinions; but I can’t help but draw parallels between books that I read over thirty (ahem) years ago and the world as we know it today.

One was a fictional account of the Rapture. For years after reading this book, the mere mention of “the end times” would send me into an absolute meltdown. Written long before the Left Behind series, the title escapes me- but not the plot.  A young girl, the main character, was “left behind” to endure the tribulation without food or medicine. Brought up in a Christian home, she was one of the few that realized what had happened. Military-garbed enforcers imprisoned, tortured, and killed all those who refused to take the “mark of the beast” i.e. world leader.  One of the most frightening scenes described in the book was when the young girl was boiled in oil for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

Extreme and…unimaginable, right

Another book that I read as a young adult was When Your Money System Fails written by Mary Stewart Relf, published in 1981. A treatise on how a “cashless society” emerges under a universal world government, the author explored then-unheard of topics such as the government having technology to monitor and manipulate its citizens, microchips, debit cards, barcodes, a World Banking System, and a One World Church. It described the unifying of Europe with one leader-eventually leading to a world leader.

Extreme and…unimaginable, right

I’m scared again. So scared that I almost resigned from Politichicks and closed my account on Facebook.  Why? I am reading again…articles, blogs, newspapers, and commentary. I read enough to make me paranoid.  I see “Big Brother” everywhere.

I see a country where our president wants to “detain” those he feels are a threat…without charges, without a trial…indefinitely.

I see a country whose president would create a haven for illegal immigrants by giving them legal status at the expense of its own citizens.

I see a country where individual states’ rights are being eroded by the federal government. I see a country whose president is more concerned with “peaceful dialogue” with other world leaders than protecting America’s interests and people first and foremost.

I see a country where the slaughtering of unborn babies is called a “woman’s reproductive right” and those that disagree on abortion are accused of “waging a war on women”.

I see an economy that should be vibrant and strong that has instead been reduced to an entitlement society with an administration advocating for its citizens to have greater and greater dependence on the federal government.

I see the face of evil every time there is a news report from the Middle East, showing Christians being forced to flee from their homes to escape imprisonment, torture, or death because of their beliefs.

In the United States, I see Christians mocked, made fun of, and called names by media and private citizens alike. I see Christians boycotted and banned from exercising their 1st amendment rights.  I see prayers, crosses, Nativity scenes, and Bible studies prohibited from our schools. I see any mention of God in the DNC platform almost leading to a floor fight.

I see people afraid to speak the truth because of the fear of being labeled “politically incorrect”.

Extreme and…unimaginable, right

Maybe…or maybe I’m not so paranoid after all.

Ye are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4
